*This is post does not substitute medical advice. You should seek the advice of a medical professional if you suspect you are having a manic episode and need help.*

Dealing with a bipolar manic episode can be a challenging experience. Here are some tips that may be helpful:

  1. Seek medical attention

If you suspect that you are experiencing a manic episode, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. A healthcare provider can help you manage your symptoms and provide you with the necessary treatment. Support groups are often great for helping people with Bipolar Disorders because they provide tips, consistency, emotional support from people who understand, and stability.

2. Stay on your medication

If you are taking medication for bipolar disorder, it is important to continue taking it as prescribed. Even if you feel better, stopping your medication can lead to relapse of symptoms. If you don’t like the way your medication makes you feel, discuss this with your doctor to receive medication adjustments or alternative care.

3. Keep a routine

Maintaining a regular routine can help you manage your symptoms. Try to get up and go to bed at the same time each day, eat meals around the same time everyday, and maintain an exercise routine. I’ve also noticed that some people find that keeping their home tidy, makes them feel more in control and gives them a clear mind.

4. Avoid drugs and alcohol

Substance abuse can symptoms worse, so it is important to avoid drugs and alcohol. You may also want to consider your caffeine consumption.

5. Reach out for support

Talk to trusted friends and family about how you’re feeling. Make sure you share with them the things that help you feel stable so that they can help you when you start to feel overwhelmed. Trusted family and friends provide emotional support and help you stay on track with your treatment.

6. Manage stress

Stress can trigger a manic episode, so it is important to manage stress in your life. Identify triggers and typical behaviors that you have when you’re experiencing mania. Some people find that they spend a large amount of money so they will keep their credit cards with someone they trust when they know they are going to have a manic episode.

Consider what strategies you need to engage in to help you and think about stress management techniques such as exercise, deep breathing, engaging in a hobby, etc.

7. Keep a mood journal

Keeping a journal of your moods can help you identify triggers and track your progress over time. One mood journal that I recommend is eMoods. eMoods is an app that you can download on your phone so that you can track your moods, which may help you predict when a manic episode is coming along.

A mood journal can help you come up with a stability plan and engage in support ahead of time. You can share your mood journal with your health care providers which will help them understand what’s going on so that they can best serve you.

Managing bipolar disorder is a journey, and it may take time to find the right treatment and coping strategies. With time, patience, and persistence, it is possible to live a fulfilling life with bipolar disorder. What has worked for you in managing manic symptoms? Let me know on Instagram!
